the Method

The levonorgestrel intrauterine device —also known as the hormonal IUD— is a highly effective, long-acting, reversible contraceptive with important non-contraceptive health benefits including potential reduction in menstrual cramps and blood loss, and fewer side effects compared to other hormonal methods.

Evidence

Expanding contraceptive choice increases individuals’ ability to freely choose the family planning methods that best meet their reproductive desires and needs. The global community is generating evidence to better understand the potential impact of expanding global access to the hormonal IUD. Results can help inform national introduction and scale-up plans.

Research is being conducted with current and potential users of the hormonal IUD to better understand their perceptions of the method.

Providers’ experiences are being documented to better understand potential barriers and facilitators that may impact hormonal IUD provision in both the public and private sectors.

Efforts are underway to support coordination at both the global- and country-levels to facilitate broader access to the hormonal IUD.
