CYP is the estimated protection provided by family planning methods during a one-year period, based on the volume of all contraceptives sold or distributed free of charge to clients during that period. In 2022, FHI 360 and Avenir Health developed a brief to synthesize findings relevant to CYP and provide updated recommendations for the CYP calculations of new and existing methods. The brief recommends that the CYP conversion factor for the hormonal IUD be updated from 3.3 CYP per insertion (calculated in 2011) to 4.8 CYP per insertion.
