Formed as a partnership between Population Council - the developers of the first hormonal IUD - and Schering (later acquired by Bayer AG) in 2004, the International Contraceptive Access Foundation has paved the way for global access to the hormonal IUD through donation of an unbranded hormonal IUD product. The Foundation has donated close to 250,000 units to partners in 47 countries; in most countries, ICA Foundation-donated product was the first experience with the method in the public sector. Donated product has been used to conduct pivotal pilot research on user experiences and service delivery with and for the hormonal IUD, directly contributing to the decision of more than 19 new low- and middle-income countries to scale-up the method.
